Why Alan should buy a banjo whenever he feels the urge:
The Drop-Dead Sexy Banjo...I get more pleasure out that oxymoron than I ever thought possible. I have a few more Sexy Banjo Man photos I'll add in here if I have time before I have to leave for Redding.
And this is another one of my favourites from last night at the Mystic Theatre:
I liked Petaluma. It wasn't a huge crowd and it wasn't a balls-to-the-wall show; but on a persistently rainy Tuesday in Petaluma, inside the Mystic Theatre, a tired-but-generous band joined up with a supportively appreciative crowd...and together, they made it a very good night for all, a successful joint effort all around.
I have just a couple of videos, one a Yankee Sailor that left me breathless (done with a carefully discreet camera since last time this venue didn't allow video at all - the advantage of that carefully discreet camera being a view that matches the song in its beauty).
The other videos are a pair of amusing impromptu bits. I'll refrain from commenting on the first one (except to say it is where I got this blog's title) and as for the second, who would have expected a Buffalo Springfield/5 Man Electrical Band impromptu singalong at a GBS show? They are always full of surprises. And delights.
And now I have the Pocket Song in my head again, probably all the way to Redding. Which is just fine by me.
One note before I get the last few things packed up and head out: In a way, I kind of wish this tour leg hadn't happened, that they could have taken a substantial break directly after that spectacular Canada Games show in Halifax. That would have been the better way to write it, but since this is living it instead of writing it, things tend to turn out a bit less neatly wrapped up.
Of course, I'm glad for all the folks who are getting to see them because of this Last Gasp of the Safe Tour - there was a fellow there last night from Norway, first time in the States, first time not only seeing them but also of hearing any of their music, and he had a wonderful time - and I so admire and respect the excellent efforts that are being made on these stages. It's far easier to put on good shows when you're feeling on top of the world, but it's much more of an achievement to do so when you aren't. I'm really proud of that achievement.
One final comment, because I can't resist saying it: Alan is always and forever the gorgeous and sexy Rock Star Guitar God when he's (rightfully) full of himself and strutting his stuff in the blaze of the spotlights at stage edge. But he is an even more gorgeous man when he's weary and a bit dishevelled and working as hard as he can...and then he gets that sweet, grateful Petty Harbour Boy grin on his face when the love comes pouring back up to him. That is when he is at his most beautiful, his most lovable, and his most irresistible of all - as well as his sexiest. And his tallest.
